One of the hardest things for a person to do is to see their own personal value. We’re often our own worst critics and beat ourselves up for little mistakes that we make along the way. Because of this, we get into the habit of looking to others for recognition and validation for our work. This makes us vulnerable to the way we think others perceive us and can spiral into a deep level of self-doubt.

As leaders, it’s important to be able to see our own self-worth and to feel personally empowered. Without this personal feeling of empowerment, it’s hard for us to be encouraging and influential leaders. If we can’t see our own value, how can we feel we are a good leader to those around us?

But how do you learn to see your own personal worth? With so many daily challenges to overcome, it is important to practice certain activities on a regular basis. They will reinforce your value and help you feel empowered and strong.

Personal empowerment involves developing the confidence and strength to set realistic goals and fulfill your potential. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and a range of skills that are used in everyday situations. But all too often, people remain unaware of or undervalue their true abilities

Start by being patient with your weaknesses. No one is perfect. And it takes time and effort for everyone to do tasks that they struggle with or that they aren’t well-versed in. Having patience and respecting your limitations help you see where you need to ask for help and depend on those from your team to fulfill the tasks.

People often forget that their shortcomings aren’t permanent. That brings us to the next idea that can help you feel personally empowered. Nurture your strengths while growing new skills. The issues that you face are just opportunities to learn and improve. Continue to use your mastered skills while garnering new skills through practice. You can feel very proud for the hard work you’re doing and for the personal development. They will make you an even stronger individual.

The balance between nurturing your current skills and growing new ones is very important. Leaving already mastered skills unused makes your mastery diminish. This won’t help you feel confident as a leader. You want to ensure that you are still practicing these skills on a regular basis to maintain your prowess. Adding in new skills helps you improve your overall value. Doing both of these activities means that you’ll feel accomplished. It’s also important to remember that taking a few risks isn’t a bad thing. Even if you’re testing out a new skill set and make a small risk, you’ll end up with it paying off as you expected, or it could fail. Either way, in success you hit a milestone and in failure, you learn from the mistake to find a better solution. And, at the end of the day, knowing you already have your master skills to work with, reminds you that your failure is just a step in the direction towards a satisfying success!

Finally, taking time to celebrate these accomplishments is imperative to continue the momentum of your successes. Celebration allows you to feel recognized for your strengths. It helps you feel successful even when other areas of your work aren’t necessarily going well. It helps you to remember that each day you manage to complete all kinds of important tasks – many of which go unnoticed. By noticing these little wins and acknowledging them, you are reminded of your value and you are empowered by your victories.

Life is a balance of successes and failures. Any good leader knows that both extremes are necessary for growth. Being able to see this balance and to use it to your benefit is a huge step in the direction towards feeling self-empowered. You’ll know that you’re on the right path when you start to see your self-worth even within your shortcomings.
